Wool A Natural Fiber

Wool is the fiber that we get from sheep and certain other animals. We get cashmere and mohair from goats, qiviut from muskoxen, alpaca and animals in the camel family, and angora from rabbits.

Wool's scaling and crimp allow fleece to be spun easier by helping the individual fibers attach to each other so that they stay together during the process. Because wool has a crimp, wool fabrics have a greater bulk than other textiles and they retain air, which causes the wool to retain heat. And not only will wool keep heat in, it can also keep heat out. Bedouins and Tuaregs use wool clothes to stay cooler.

Wool fibers retain moisture, and will wick moisture away from the body. Wool can absorb up to one third it’s weight in moisture.
Wool will ignite at a higher temperature than other fabrics and spreads less quickly than other fabrics. It will self extinguish, has a low heat release, and does not have toxins like some other fabrics. It will not melt or drip. It is also resistant to static electricity. These qualities make wool a specified product high safety environments and for clothing for people who are likely exposed to fire.

Wool is a wonderful, natural fiber that we often overlook. Take a look around and see what beautful items can be made from wool!

Whatever you are looking for, don't overlook wool! There are many qualities that wool has that other fabrics simply do not have. Take a second look at wool. It is a natural fiber that is good for the environment. So it's not an old fashioned fabric, it is just coming in to it's own!!
