"Christmas gift suggestions: To your enemy, forgiveness. To an opponent, tolerance. To a friend, your heart. To a customer, service. To all, charity. To every child, a good example. To yourself, respect." ~ Oren Arnold
One of my favorite thoughtful but EASY gifts is the gift of.........(drum roll)........grass.
I personally suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD, (the lack of sunlight) beginning in the late fall and I crave seeing green and having some grass to watch grow. I've done this for probably 20 years and each year it is fun to see what I can come up with to plant my 'tiny yard' in. I am no clinical researcher but this small thing definitely brightens my days and I feel better so I keep doing it.
I go to a seed store or probably a hardware store that sells seed. I buy perennial rye because it is so easy to grow. It is a perennial so don't fling it out in your yard.....it'll grow grow grow. I like the broad leaves of the rye but there are any number of seeds you can grow.
Line your container with a seed starter tray if it is larger. or alum foil.
For example plant in this cute little wagon you can get from angelonthewind

It can be very shallow and your soil or growing medium only 1 - 2 inches deep. If your container is too deep, fill it with rocks, styrofoam bits. If there are no drain holes a bit of those rock or styrofoam will do. Never allow water to stand. Use a mister daily to dampen the seed or more often if needed. The rye grass pops in just 3-4 days and grows rapidly,
My kitties love grass so I trim it and give them a treat. They really like wheat grass.
Sprinkle the seed, mist it and that's it. Here's a couple of other planting items at OLA.
Fron korncountrytreasures there's this planter

I like this..perennial rye. Keep it trimmed and it will keep growing as long as you keep misting the soil.
This is a broader leaf grass and has a different look. I don't remember the name. Sorry
To gift...start with a very small pot...like the very small clay pots with the little tray and a small plastic bag of seed and a small bag of planting medium. Type or write the instructions. Put it all in a brown lunch bag and staple a raffia bow with some small shiny balls. Very cute and fun to receive. Just another inexpensive idea. It's the thought that counts.....Have fun!!
