American Express to Acquire PayPal Competitor RevolutionMoneyExchange

American Express to Acquire PayPal Competitor Revolution Money

Reading AuctionBytes: American Express to Acquire PayPal Competitor Revolution Money

American Express Company is acquiring Revolution Money, which was launched by AOL co-founder Steve Case's Revolution LLC in 2007. Revolution Money is an online person-to-person payment whose accounts are FDIC insured and targeted at social and instant messaging networks. It also offers a prepaid card linked to those accounts that can be used for offline payments or to withdraw cash from ATMs throughout the United States.

Interestingly, online payment services are dominated by Internet firms, such as PayPal, Google Checkout and Amazon Payments as well as international firms such as PayMate, ProPay and Moneybookers, while financial services firms such as Western Union (MoneyZap) and Citi (C2it) were unable to sustain their online payment services.

Revolution MoneyExchange has a plug-in for AIM, AOL's Instant Messaging service. Users can send money through the instant messaging service to people on their "Buddy list" using a screen that Revolution Money manages.

Kenneth I. Chenault, Chairman and CEO of American Express, said in the press announcement, "New payments products and platforms are evolving rapidly and it's important for us to keep identifying cutting edge technologies that can extend our leadership beyond the traditional payments arena. While Revolution Money is a young and relatively small company, we believe it has big potential. This is a smart, nimble business. It's run by an accomplished management team who have quickly developed some cutting edge e-payment offerings. Joining with American Express will help unlock their potential, while allowing us to deliver competitive online payment products more rapidly and efficiently."

Jason Hogg will continue as President and CEO. Ted Leonsis, a Revolution Money angel investor, major shareholder and chairman, will become a special advisor to American Express working with Mr. Chenault on overall digital and online payments strategy.

"We have built a next-generation payments platform that will enable American Express to compete even more effectively, especially against online competitors," said Mr. Leonsis. "Revolution Moneys technology brings together the online and offline worlds in a way that can transform the way consumers securely transact. And with the low cost structure enabled by internet technology, American Express is now even better positioned to scale their online presence over time."

The transaction, which is subject to regulatory review, is expected to close in the first quarter of 2010. The purchase price is expected to be approximately $300 million. Upon closing, Revolution Money would operate as a subsidiary of American Express and be the first component of its recently formed Enterprise Growth organization. Enterprise Growth was formed to leverage American Express' existing assets and capabilities to generate incremental fee revenue and to drive the company's entry into new payment areas and related businesses. Initial areas of focus will include:

* Developing re-loadable, prepaid products for new segments of the market
* Introducing new products for cardmembers who currently use other alternative payment systems
* Creating payment alternatives designed for social media sites and allowing open APIs that can help developers distribute new product innovations
* Developing mobile payments solutions in the United States

Other opportunities will include expanding Revolution Money payment solutions internationally, extending product offerings to banks that issue cards on the American Express network and creating new forms of PIN-based debit products.

I Am Thankful For.......

.......all members of our military who put themselves in harms way to protect our freedom...we must do our part...be informed and vote accordingly.

There's always a lot to be thankful for if you take time to look for it. For example, I am sitting here thinking how nice it is that wrinkles don't hurt...

I am thankful I wake up every morning to read my handwritten note to myself..'choose to be happy today'. Being happy doesn't mean everything is perfect. It means you've decided to see beyond the imperfections.

I am thankful I found out how to take the 'gas' out of canned beans...(rinse, cook for 10 mins in 1/4 C tap water and 2 tsp of vinegar, rinse and use)

I am making sure I have all the makings for our usual Thanksgiving dinner...musing about the turkey....thankful I am not a turkey.

It's Thanksgiving soon so let’s ignore diet tips at least until the leftovers are gone. Remember, “tips” spelled backwards is “spit.”..........that’s gotta mean something.

I am thankful that if I don't finish something today, I can finish it up tomorrow....think I'll take a nap....

seasons greetings border

Vintage Hanging Wall Clock Oak Wood with Second hand

Great solid Oak wood hanging Vintage wall clock. There is no brand name on the clock, it was a hand made clock and is 30+ years old we were told. The person we purchased it from said that her husband had built it for her many years ago. He wanted to make it for her from scratch as they were unable to afford one that was already made, so alot of love & care went into this clock. There is a compartment in the lower area of the clock with a door on it. This is a great place to put some type of nick nack or for a hidey hole. There is a glass panel over this compartment.
The face cover of the clock appears to be a very hard clear plastic bubble style with a brass ring around the outer edge, which lifts up from the bottom for easy adjustment to the hands of the clock. There is a sweeping second hand. There are wall hanging mounts on the back.
The clock is approx. 23" high x 15 1/2" x  about 4" deep. Because of its size and weight it will only be shipped parcel post. The clock is battery operated and runs on 1 AA battery which is included.
It is used and does show signs of use and age. The hands do have some scratches on them and either looks like there was black paint put on them at one time or that the coloring is fadeing. But overall it is in good condition. Everything works as it should. Just a very nice well built vintage clock.
Any questions please ask.

Onions and the Flu - Just an Old Wives Tale?

ONIONS AND THE FLU - An Old Wives Tale?

from a post by Goldi at OnlineAuction.com (OLA)

In 1919 when the flu killed 40 million people there was this Doctor that
visited the many farmers to see if he could help them combat the flu.
Many of the farmers and their family had
contracted it and many died.

The doctor came upon this one
farmer and to his surprise, everyone
was very healthy. When the doctor asked
what the farmer was doing that
was different
the wife replied that she had
placed an unpeeled
onion in a dish in the rooms of the
home, (probably only two rooms back
then). The doctor couldn't believe it and asked if he
could have one of the onions and
place it under the microscope.
She gave him
one and when he did this, he
did find the flu virus in the onion. It
obviously absorbed the bacteria,
therefore, keeping the family healthy.

Now, I heard this story from my
hairdresser in AZ. She said
that several years ago many of her employees were
coming down with the flu and so were
many of her customers.
The next year she placed several
bowls with onions around in her shop. T o
her surprise, none of her staff got sick.
It must work.. (And no, she is not in the onion
business.)

The moral of the story is, buy some
onions and place them in bowls around
your home. If you work at a desk, place one or two in your office or
under your desk or even on top somewhere. Try it and see what
happens. We did it last year and we never got the flu.

If this helps you and your loved ones
from getting sick, all the better. If you
do get the flu, it just might be a mild case..

Whatever, what have you to lose? Just a few bucks on onions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now there is a P. S. to this for I sent
it to a friend in Oregon who regularly contributes material to me on
health issues. She replied with this most interesting experience about
onions:

Weldon, thanks for the reminder. I don't know
about the farmers
story...but, I do know that I
contacted pneumonia and
needless to say I
was very ill...I came
across an article that said to cut
both ends off an onion put one end on a fork and then
place the forked end into an empty
jar...placing the jar next to the sick patient at
night. It said the onion
would be black in the morning from the
germs...sure enough it happened just
like that...the onion was a mess and I
began to feel better.
Another thing I read in the article was that onions
and garlic placed around the room saved many from the black plague years ago. They have
powerful antibacterial, antiseptic properties.

********end of Vermonter's post at OLA*********

Here is what I said (and think) when I posted on the thread at OnlineAuction.com (OLA):

I read the snopes file and while I saw what they had to say, which basically amounts to 'there is no scientific proof', that can be said about a lot of old folk/wives tales.

For instance: At the beginning of each summer, as a child I would inevitably get a sliver of glass in my foot. When it happened, my Grandmother would cut and tape a piece of raw potato to my foot to draw out the glass. Sounds pretty silly, but it always worked. Someone told me it was all in my mind, so one summer I didn't use the potato... instead I went to the ER and they shot novacaine into the cut and then dug the glass out, leaving a huge whole (stitches were then required) and eventually a scar... in addition to a pretty hefty bill from the hospital... and guess what? They still didn't get it all... so I taped a frigging potato to my foot and guess what? You got it... the glass worked it's way out... so now, when I get a sliver of glass (or anyone I know does), we get a potato and get the glass out. Old Wives Tale? Sure... but it has never failed... and of course, there is no 'scientific proof' for it... but it always works.

For the price of a few onions (about $3.00 for a bag of about 8 onions), I'm willing to give it a try... I don't know if it works, but I know my Grandmother did it and I definitely KNOW we didn't get colds and flu when I was a kid...

Science be d&%#$d, they say we came from monkeys... what do they REALLY know anyway... they can't prove it works, but they can't prove it doesn't either... roflmao!!!

Service is free, and so is shipping

:) We have been struggling with the shipping prices seeing those that have high shipping and handling prices, and also seeing those that don't charge at all, after thinking about this for some time, as a kid growing up in central Ne and around my dad's filling station where we went out and pumped your gas, checked your oil, and aired your tires for you, just becaused you bought your gas from us, this was the price you paid for doing business, now days there seem to be a charge for every thing, so here at LFWoodWorking we have decided that we are turning our clock's back years not just hours, the price you see is the total price you pay and the service is free.
We just hope that people will remember the good old times and the young that don't get to injoy it to.
I want every one that does business with me will go away feeling like they got more than they paid for.
Stop by and check out what we have listed and we will be adding more soon to, so make sure to check back soon and often.
Thanks
Rick :)

Garden History Chapter 15

The Back Yard Garden By Night
This summer I was meandering in the back yard and thought it would be fun to take a few pictures of the garden by night.
This is a picture of the dwarf apple tree bearing fruit. By the way, the apples were delicious!

In an earlier chapter I told you what we did with the lattice and this bench seat. This photo shows the morning glories climbing right up to the top and over. I think I might put a little table in front of the bench. That might make for a cozier sitting arrangement! Just trying to hid the brick path to nowhere.
These next picture is of the vegetable garden. In our climate we can usually plant string beans several times because of the long growing season. I believe this was planting number three. Some of the plantings had a harder time than others because we had a pretty bad water shortage.
I like to keep a little light in the back yard so we found these nifty solar yard lights. Normally people put them in the ground but we wanted them on the fence so my hubby modified them so we could do just that. The put out much more light this way too. I lightened this first picture a bit so you can clearly see some of the drought damage to the grass.

The fence reminds me of a runway, when night falls.

Stay tuned for the next chapter. Thanks.
