Inquiring Minds Want To Know.....Cow Facts

1.A cow can climb up the stairs, but cannot climb down. This is because her knees cannot bend properly.

2. A cow produces around 200,000 glasses of milk in her lifetime.

3. A cow stands up and sits down about 14 times a day.

4. A cow usually spends 6-7 hours in a day eating cud and around 8 hours on chewing it.

5. Almost all the cows chew at least 50 times per minute.

6. An average cow has more than 40,000 jaw movements in a day.

7.  A cow eats over 100 lbs. of food and drinks 30 to 40 gallons of water each day.   Now this leads to  urinating about 30 lbs of water and pooping about 60 lbs of feces each day.

8. Cows do not bite grass; rather they curl their tongue around it.

9. Cows have almost total 360-degree panoramic vision.

10. Cows have an acute sense of smell and can smell something up to 6 miles away.  (I've known some people you could smell that far away

After putting these together..I got curious and decided I had to do some further research.  The first cows were introduced in the new land by Christopher Columbus on his 2nd trip here in 1611 and again in 1615.  It has been said that one reason for the high death rate among those who traveled to the New World on the Mayflower was that they had no fresh milk to drink. Cows were brought from Europe to the Jamestown colony in 1611 and to the Plymouth colony in 1624.  Now, those ships were, by todays standards, very small.  Did they just bring one cow? or how many?  That would mean a WHOLE WHACK of food and fresh water.....which would then mean a WHOLE PILE  of  the resulting 'by-product' after each cow ate and drank all day (phew).  Where did they store all that food and fresh water and what or who disposed of all that so-called 'by-product'?

Inquiring minds want to know............I could go on or if you're interested in any other  factoids, just let me know:)

Wyoming Sky

We see such spectacular scenery on the way to Montana! Sometimes I get pictures, sometimes I just drink it in! God really does have such a splendid way of showing us His creation!

This is a picture of the sun going down in Wyoming, right around Buffalo. It really was gorgeous!! And my picture may not do it justice but take my word for it . . . it was a hundred times more spectacular!

Every time we drive out here, we see different things. We don't take the time to stop and see all the tourist attractions because we are always in a rush to spend time with my dad. And the only time we ever stopped over was in Rapid City when our kids were small. We did stop at Mount Rushmore that year.

Someday, my husband and I will stop at every one of these tourist attractions and take our time. That will be the last time we come to Montana. Even though I was born in this state, except for my dad, my family are all elsewhere now. I have been driving out here in one fashion or another since 1969. That is a very long time!!

So, each time we come out, I drink in the beauty!! No matter the season, there is always something that God has for me to see! This old earth is beautiful!

Thank you for listening to me ramble! Please enjoy the picture and if you are in the holiday shopping spirit, please visit OLA.com!! Lots of great sellers there!! They are my friends and family! And when I get back I will get my listings back up, also!! Be sure to check us out next week at Korn Kountry Treasures.

Team OLA Blogs

I had a blog for today but for some reason it did not stay on very long. It was about the numbers in blogging and I had thought if we blogged each day until the end of the year we could beat the highest for the years of 2009 and 2010.

As of today we have 119 blogs and that is only  for the month of November. I wrote down the numbers that I saw to the side of the blogs.

For the year of 2009 there were a total of 308 blogs.
For the year of 2010 there were a total of 207 blogs
For the year of 2011 there are a total of 191 BUT for the month of November 2011 we have 119 blogs so far and the year is not over.

I think we can beat the figures above and set a new record if we try and also if we can get some others to blog and help us.

We have a very large community and only a few bloggers. I do not have an answer for why this is but I wish we could change it. Any suggestions from anyone else?

Thanks for reading my blog and please leave a comment. Good or bad they all count.

Christmas Hint #16 -- Make Your Own List for Santa

Another notebook item should be gift ideas for yourself and other family members. Anytime after Labor Day, when you hear someone on your list say “I’d like one of those,” make a note. If you have a smart phone, just text it to yourself, then file it later. This hint is especially useful if some of your family members are on painfully strict budgets. All year long you can jot down inexpensive items that you or other family members would like. Then, when someone asks you what you want for Christmas, instead of drawing a blank, you can pull out your list and offer some nice, affordable options. Also, if you are hard to buy for, stop buying anything for yourself after Labor Day, drop plenty of hints, then hope for the best on Christmas morning. If you don’t get what you want, shop for it yourself after the holidays. Almost everything goes on sale in January.

Here's an example of something I'd like for myself (I don't mind used or re-gifted items).

ZZZZZzzzzz.....

'Bout time to hit the hay...seems like this was a loooooong day... had to go to work early this morning, then went to a Bunco fundraiser for a local foodbank, and just got home a little bit ago. Now I gotta go to bed and start all over tomorrow.  Here's some interesting sleep-tidbits..

The extra-hour of sleep received when clocks are put back at the start of daylight in Canada has been found to coincide with a fall in the number of road accidents.

Humans sleep on average around three hours less than other primates like chimps, rhesus monkeys, squirrel monkeys and baboons, all of whom sleep for 10 hours.

The “natural alarm clock” which enables some people to wake up more or less when they want to is caused by a burst of the stress hormone adrenocorticotropin. Researchers say this reflects an unconscious anticipation of the stress of waking up.

Scientists have not been able to explain a 1998 study showing a bright light shone on the backs of human knees can reset the brain’s sleep-wake clock.

Most of what we know about sleep we’ve learned in the past 25 years.

Experts say one of the most alluring sleep distractions is the 24-hour accessibility of the Internet.       (I Agree!!)
