Interview with MetzyMom!!

Now, for those of you that aren't in the know, MetzyMom has been the radio hostess for OLA.com for a year now!! The radio program is on TalkShoe and the next show will be held February 29!! Beginning at 8:00 pm EST.

This will be a longer running show as Metzy has traveled from Arizona, her home state, to Oregon to have the show LIVE at the OLA.com office!! Wow!! And as you can see in prior posts, she has been meeting up with various OLA.com members along the way and she's not done yet!!

Before Metzy took off, she did an interview with me about the show. And, as promised, here it is.

When is the anniversary show going to be held?

The show is currently scheduled for the 29th of February. I had planned to do it on February 2nd, but with what has been described as "the worst weather to hit the Northwest in 30 years", I figured I'd better do some rethinking. I mean let's face it... I'm a fabulous driver but I drive in Hot Arizona, not Snowbound Oregon!!!

What are some of the topics going to be? I know this is the one year anniversary for the radio show but what else? I know that it's going to be a review, of the year? Of course, seller of the month for February, and you said you'd have a couple of guests. Anything else?

The show is going to be a review of the last year. A walk down memory lane. I plan to talk a little bit about everything we've done up til now. I've got a couple surprises up my sleeve, but people will have to tune in to the LIVE show to find out what... and there will be prizes!!! The only hint I'm gonna give is this: Make sure you know what we covered... lol... take an hour a day, while you're listing this next week, and listen to a different show each day. It will be worth your while!!!

How did you get started in this? What prompted you to do the radio show?

I was a dedicated fan of Dave White, the original OLA Radio host. He always encouraged me to call in and participate during the LIVE show. I usually called in and participated for a few minutes each show... for maybe, I don't know, maybe 4 or 5 months. Dave decided he wanted a co-host and auditions were held. I don't know how many people auditioned, I only know of 2 others who tried out. I didn't even know I'd won the job until the day of the following show! From that time on, I got to be on every show and give my opinions and share facts and research.

When Dave got sick and quit doing eCommerce Radio, a hole was left in the eCommerce radio world. I didn't think about continuing on without him, because like everyone else, I thought he'd get better and return. When that didn't happen, I began thinking about doing the OLA Show myself. I was already doing a weekly eCommerce radio program for ALL sites, but my heart has always been here at OnlineAuction.com. So when Chris Fain came through Kingman one hot summer day in July 2010, we briefly discussed it. With the way that eCommerce was changing, it was becoming harder and harder to do a show for ALL sites and so I put SellerBuzz on hiatus and got ready to bring back OLA Radio.

What was your goal when you started?

My goal was to provide a once a month informative and educational eCommerce program specific to OnlineAuction.com Members. Many things in eCommerce can apply to all sites, but each site has it's differences. I wanted to highlight how OnlineAuction.com was different and better and at the same time, provide an easy path to learning this better but different platform. There is a learning curve when you join a new site and I hoped I could make the curve a little less curvy, kind of a "quick start" to listing at OnlineAuction.com.

What is your goal today? I imagine it might have changed a tad since beginning.

It has! In the beginning, it was a lot of dry basics. Now it's a lot more fun for me, and hopefully for everyone else too. Whereas the focus in the beginning was more on learning the boring basics, now it's more interactive. It's more about Everyone instead of Everything.

What was the BEST program that you had and why?

Easy answer! I loved the Christmas Show. I had been told by many of my radio host peers that what I wanted to do couldn't be done, that many before me had tried and it just never worked out right. That didn't stop me from trying it anyway! Nothing ventured nothing gained.... My idea was to work the show so that it felt like an office party. People stopping by, sharing a toast, having a drink or bite to eat, hugs and kisses, and back out on their way to the next party. By coordinating with the OLA Staff and OLA Chatties, I think that was exactly the feel of the show. It took a lot of work and a lot of coordination, but it felt like a Christmas Party to me... I hope it felt like that to everyone else.

What was the worst program that you had and why?

I don't think in terms of a "worst" program, because each program is a lesson in something different... and sometimes that "something different" is a surprise to even me. The first program featured our beloved CEO Chris Fain, but Chris couldn't get in on the phone line. It should have been a disaster... except that it really wasn't. I learned how to get a guest on the air even when they couldn't get on themselves. We all learned that not everything goes as smooth and easy as we'd like, but that with a little patience and perhaps a little dead air time, everything works out in the end if we stick with it. I had originally planned to edit out all that dead air, but decided, in the end, that it was a great lesson in sticking to what you're doing, seeing what you're doing through, even when it's tough. I kind of think of OLA that way. When I first came, it was new and a challenge because all I knew was eBay. But I stuck with it and saw it through. I learned how to lean into the learning curve and embrace it. So I don't think of any of the shows as "worst" shows... because I learned something valuable from each one.

I presume that you ARE going to continue!!! Right??????

I am going to continue. As long as OLA wants me to host the show, I'll be there. I'm thinking about doing some different things this year... like maybe having a guest co-host on a few of the shows... I think we've got a lot of people with a lot to say... and I hope to give more people a voice through the show.

So, if you want to know what the show is all about, go to TalkShoe on February 29th to see what is going on!! It's going to be a blast!!

Thank you, Metzy, for being so willing to do the interview and for being such a great hostess this past year!! May we have many more shows with you to come!!

Take These To Bed With You ....No Joke

Tell your spouse, your children, your neighbors, your parents,
your Dr's office, the check-out girl at the market, everyone you
run across.
Put your car keys beside your bed at night.

If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get
in your house, just press the panic button for your car.  The
alarm will be set off, and the horn will continue to sound until
either you turn it off or the car battery dies.

This tip came from a neighborhood watch coordinator.  Next
time you come home for the night and you start to put your
keys away, think of this:  It's a security alarm system that you
probably already have and requires no installation.
Test it.
It will go off from most everywhere inside your house and
will keep honking until your battery runs down or until you
reset it with the button on the key fob chain. It works if you
park in your driveway or garage.

If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break
into your house, odds are the burglar/rapist won't stick around.
After a few seconds, all the neighbors will be looking out their
windows to see who is out there and sure enough the criminal
won't want that.
And remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in
a parking lot.  The alarm can work the same way there.  This is
something that should really be shared with everyone.  Maybe
it could save a life or a sexual abuse crime.

I am sending this to everyone I know because I think it is fantastic.
Would also be useful for any emergency, such as a heart attack,
where you can't reach a phone.
I have has suggested to my husband that he carry his car keys
with him in case he has a problem outside and I can't hear him.
He can activate the car alarm and then I'll know there's a problem.
We did tried this from our basement and also from our
bedroom and it does set off the alarm and horn on my van.
I hope this information is helpful to some and I hope you copy
and paste it in an email or omail to all your friends.
Be safe, be healthy and be happy

Metzy's trip . . . .

Talked to Metzy just a few minutes ago.

She had a travel tip for us!!

Travel tip #1 from Metzy: "You can always tell the kind of stay you will have by the bathroom."

She said the Gold Country Casino in Oroville is amazing!! The bedroom is bigger than all her bedrooms in her house!! The bathroom is exceptional with a rubber ducky for the roman tub!! Wow!!

She said it is so clean, she doesn't even want to leave a deposit!!

The hotel she stayed at in Hollywood was also exceptional.
The hotel in Monteray was a disaster. Pictures to come later.

She is on her way to have breakfast with Amy~MaggieMayBeCrafty and then on to have lunch with Suze~CountryNaturals. After that is the big push to Grants Pass!!

Woohoo!! You go, girl!!

FACTS ABOUT HONEY AND CINNAMON

My husband sent me this in an email and I thought it was worth sharing with my friends.

Honey is the only food on the planet that will not spoil or rot. What it will do is what some call 'turning to sugar'. In reality, honey is always honey. However, when left in a cool dark place for a long time it will "crystallize". When this happens loosen the lid, boil some water and sit the honey container in the hot water, but turn off the heat and let it liquefy naturally. It is then as good as it ever was. Never boil honey or put it in a microwave. This will kill the enzymes in the honey.

Honey and Cinnamon

Bet the drug companies won't like this one getting around. Facts on Honey and Cinnamon:
It is found that a mixture of honey and Cinnamon cures most diseases. Honey is produced in most of the countries of the world. Scientists of today also accept honey as a 'Ram Ban' (very effective) medicine for all kinds of diseases. Honey can be used without side effects for any kind of diseases.
Today's science says that even though honey is sweet, when it is taken in the right dosage as a medicine, it does not harm even diabetic patients. Weekly World News, a magazine in Canada, in its issue dated 17 January,1995 has given the following list of diseases that can be cured by honey and cinnamon, as researched by western scientists:

HEART DISEASES:

Make a paste of honey and cinnamon powder, apply it on bread instead of jelly and jam and eat it regularly for breakfast. It reduces the cholesterol in the arteries and saves the patient from heart attack. Also, those who have already had an attack, when they do this process daily, they are kept miles away from the next attack. Regular use of the above process relieves loss of breath and strengthens the heart beat.. In America and Canada , various nursing homes have treated patients successfully and have found that as one ages the arteries and veins lose their flexibility and get clogged; honey and cinnamon revitalize the arteries and the veins.
ARTHRITIS:

Arthritis patients may take daily (morning and night) one cup of hot water with two tablespoons of honey and one small teaspoon of cinnamon powder. When taken regularly even chronic arthritis can be cured. In a recent research conducted at the Copenhagen University, it was found that when the doctors treated their patients with a mixture of one tablespoon Honey and half teaspoon Cinnamon powder before breakfast, they found that within a week (out of the 200 people so treated) practically 73 patients were totally relieved of pain -- and within a month, most all the patients who could not walk or move around because of arthritis now started walking without pain.

BLADDER INFECTIONS:

Take two tablespoons of cinnamon powder and one teaspoon of honey in a glass of lukewarm water and drink it. It destroys the germs in the bladder..

CHOLESTEROL:

Two tablespoons of honey and three teaspoons of Cinnamon Powder mixed in 16 ounces of tea water given to a cholesterol patient was found to reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood by 10 percent within two hours. As mentioned for arthritic patients, when taken three times a day, any chronic cholesterol is cured. According to information received in the said Journal, pure honey taken with food daily relieves complaints of cholesterol.

COLDS:

Those suffering from common or severe colds should take one tablespoon lukewarm honey with 1/4 spoon cinnamon powder daily for three days. This process will cure most chronic cough, cold, and, clear the sinuses.

UPSET STOMACH:

Honey taken with cinnamon powder cures stomach ache and also clears stomach ulcers from its root.

GAS
:
According to the studies done in India and Japan , it is revealed that when Honey is taken with cinnamon powder the stomach is relieved of gas.

IMMUNE SYSTEM:

Daily use of honey and cinnamon powder strengthens the immune system and protects the body from bacterial and viral attacks. Scientists have found that honey has various vitamins and iron in large amounts. Constant use of Honey strengthens the white blood corpuscles (where DNA is contained) to fight bacterial and viral diseases.

INDIGESTION:

Cinnamon powder sprinkled on two tablespoons of honey taken before food is eaten relieves acidity and digests the heaviest of meals.

INFLUENZA
:
A scientist in Spain has proved that honey contains a natural 'Ingredient' which kills the influenza germs and saves the patient from flu.

LONGEVITY
:
Tea made with honey and cinnamon powder, when taken regularly, arrests the ravages of old age. Use four teaspoons of honey, one teaspoon of cinnamon powder, and three cups of water and boil to make a tea. Drink 1/4 cup, three to four times a day. It keeps the skin fresh and soft and arrests old age. Life spans increase and even a 100 year old will start performing the chores of a 20-year-old..

RASPY OR SORE THROAT:
When throat has a tickle or is raspy, take one tablespoon of honey and sip until gone. Repeat every three hours until throat is without symptoms.

PIMPLES:
Three tablespoons of honey and one teaspoon of cinnamon powder paste. Apply this paste on the pimples before sleeping and wash it off the next morning with warm water. When done daily for two weeks, it removes all pimples from the root.

SKIN INFECTIONS:

Applying honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts on the affected parts cures eczema, ringworm and all types of skin infections.

WEIGHT LOSS:

Daily in the morning one half hour before breakfast and on an empty stomach, and at night before sleeping, drink honey and cinnamon powder boiled in one cup of water. When taken regularly, it reduces the weight of even the most obese person. Also, drinking this mixture regularly does not allow the fat to accumulate in the body even though the person may eat a high calorie diet.

CANCER:

Recent research in Japan and Australia has revealed that advanced cancer of the stomach and bones have been cured successfully. Patients suffering from these kinds of cancer should daily take one tablespoon of honey with one teaspoon of cinnamon powder three times a day for one month .

FATIGUE
:
Recent studies have shown that the sugar content of honey is more helpful rather than being detrimental to the strength of the body. Senior citizens who take honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts are more alert and flexible. Dr. Milton, who has done research, says that a half tablespoon of honey taken in a glass of water and sprinkled with cinnamon powder, even when the vitality of the body starts to decrease, when taken daily after brushing and in the afternoon at about 3:00 P.M., the vitality of the body increases within a week.

BAD BREATH:

People of South America, gargle with one teaspoon of honey and cinnamon powder mixed in hot water first thing in the morning so their breath stays fresh throughout the day.

HEARING LOSS:

Daily, morning and night, honey and cinnamon powder, taken in equal parts restores hearing. Remember when we were kids? We had toast with real butter and cinnamon sprinkled on it.

I hope you got something out of this as I did and will be using some of these suggestions.

My store is up and running however I still have some pictures that have not been found yet. MY CLAN

By now you know where I come from and where I live right now. You know what kind of birds I like and what kind of food I prefer. Now it`s time to meet my family. ...
The Stursberg family is an old family from the German region
"Bergisches Land" (in the Rhineland, not far from Cologne). The genealogy of this family has been particularly well researched. Those family members who are living today, bear the surnames Stursberg, Storsberg, Stosberg, Stossberg and Strasburg. Only some namesakes Stossberg do not belong to the Stursberg family,
but to the Stausberg family from the "Wildenburger Land" in the region between Rhineland and Hessen. All the other namesakes belong to the Stursberg family. The farm, where the Stursberg family originally derives from, is the hamlet called Stursberg in the parish Luettringhausen which is a part of the town of Remscheid since 1929. The feudal scroll of Luettringhausen from 1350 mentioned for the first time "das nechste Stuirß Bergh bey dem Wiedenhoffe" (the next Stursberg to the priest's farm), which in the following centuries existed in several parts and which today has the official names Stursberg I and Stursberg II.
The oldest progenitor who is known by name was living on the Stursberg hamlet in the first half of the 15th century. His name was Winolt zu Stursberg ("Winold van Stubere"), he owned the Stursberg farm and did some business in Cologne in 1445: He bought cloth there. His son,
Siebel (Sybel) van Stursberg was one of the most wealthy inhabitants of the Luettringhausen parish. He contributed with 8 Gulden to a loan taken by the duke of Berg in 1487 from his subjects. It was also Siebel who financed a memorial mess in favour of his dead father. Another son of Winolt might be Wolber van Stursberch, who was a juror of the town council and mayor of Lennep in 1470 (like Luettringhausen also Lennep is part of Remscheid since 1929), and
also Johannes Stursberg who appears in Cologne at the same time. But among the children of Winolt we can only be sure about Siebel. And Winolt and Siebel are for sure the progenitors of all the later living Stursberg namesakes.
After Siebel's death the Stursberg farm was owned by his son Nultz zu Stursbergh. In 1516 he was the master of a laic religious community in Luettringhausen, which was dedicated to St. Mary. In 1521 he is named as a juror of the tribunal of the parish. In 1542 he still must have been
alive, and at the same time his son Bernd (Bernth) Sturssbergh is mentioned. Bernd appears several times until 1563 as the owner of the Stursberg farm and as the head of the "Honschaft Hohenhagen", an administrative part of the big Luettringhausen parish. At the same time he was responsible for the treasure of the parish that in these years must have changed from the Roman
Catholic to the Lutheran confession. Bernd also built a cottage where knives and tools were sharpened and an early form of a steel factory. He also stood for the duties of the religious community which his grandfather had offered for Winolt. These duties must have disappeared when the Luettringhausen parish decided in favour of the Reformation after 1550.
From the 16th century on a second Stursberg farm is mentioned which has a lower feudal status. Later it has the name "Witten Stursbergs Gut" (widow Stursberg's farm). The farmers there may also be Siebel's descendants, but their family tribe did not reach the 17th century.
Bernd Stursberg was the last individual owner of the Stursberg farm. He must have died before 1597. In this year his farm has already been divided among his four heirs, who are obviously his four sons. All of them were not only farmers but also smiths and owners of sharpening cottages. Their names are Peter, Theiss (= Matthew), Nolze (= Arnold) and Johann. With their names the
first different Stursberg branches start. Peter and Johann had only few descendants who were bearing the name Stursberg.
Theiss Stursberg has more descendants. He is mentioned between 1597 and 1608. His son Allof (= Adolf) is his successor on his quarter of the Stursberg farm. Allof's Stursberg descendants end with his great-grandson Johann Christoph who died in 1753 without children. Another son of Theiss must have been Hilbert who owned a farm in Herbringhausen in the Luettringhausen
parish. His descendants followed Hilbert's first name and called themselves Hilbert(s) instead of Stursberg. Franz Stursberg was another of Theiss' sons: He was a merchant and juror of the town council in Lennep, and he is mentioned until 1634. Franz's son Engelbert went to Cologne and had a lot of children, but only a few grandchildren. Engelbert's brother must have been Peter Stossberg who moved to Wermelskirchen south of Remscheid. He bought half the Kenkhausen farm there. His grandson, also called Peter, is the progenitor of the Stursberg tribe
A (Wermelskirchen).
Nolze Stursberg at last had a particularly huge number of descendants. Nolze also owned one quarter of Bernd's farm. Like his brother Theiss, he was a knife maker and is mentioned between 1597 and 1602. His son and heir was Sirach Stursberg who probably died about 1640. Apart from tribe A, all the other family members derive from Sirach. Two of his sons, Zenss (= Vincent)
and Nolze (= Arnold) divided Sirach's heritage, and two more sons, Franz and Peter, owned different farms: Franz on the other side of the Stursberg farm, Peter on the Klausen hamlet in Luettringhausen, where his wife was born. Zenss's grandsons are the progenitors of five tribes (B, C, D, E, F) in Barmen (Wuppertal), Lennep, Luettringhausen and Remscheid. Heinrich Stursberg, Nolze's grandson, stayed on the Stursberg hamlet, and his descendants form tribe G.
Franz's grandsons moved to Wald (Solingen), they are the progenitors of six tribes (H, J, K, L, M, N).
Today the Stursberg family members are spread over all five continents, but most of them still live in the region "Bergisches Land" in Germany and in the neighbour regions. Apart from that, there are some more "centres" in the north of Germany and in the region of the rivers Rhine and
Main. Further namesakes are nowadays living in Switzerland, Spain, England, Canada and especially in different states of the USA. More than 5,000 persons in 20 generations altogether, living and dead, have been collected meanwhile. There are 13 tribes:
  • tribe A: especially in Wermelskirchen, Wahlscheid, Missouri, Tennessee,
    California
  • tribe B: especially in Wuppertal, Hannover, Castrop-Rauxel, Zurich
  • tribe C: especially in Wuppertal, Muenster, Sylt
  • tribe D: especially in Remscheid (Lennep), Muelheim/Ruhr, Hueckeswagen,
Dabringhausen, Aachen, Basel, New York, Utah
  • tribe E: especially in Essen, Bochum (Ruhr area), Remscheid
  • tribe F: especially in Remscheid, Wuppertal, Muenster, Louisville/Kentucky
  • tribe G: especially in Remscheid, Wuppertal, Hagen, London, Vancouver
  • tribe H: especially in Solingen, Haan, New Jersey tribe H: especially in Solingen, Haan, New Jersey
  • tribe J: especially in Solingen (no living descendants found)
  • tribe K: especially in Solingen
  • tribe L: especially in Solingen, Langenfeld, Wuppertal, Utica/New York
  • tribe M: especially in Solingen (no living descendants found)
  • tribe N: especially in Solingen, north Germany

The family coat of arms has been registered officially in 1938. It shows a black bull head with a golden crown and a golden shield, divided by a red post with three silver rafters. The helmet with black and golden ornaments wears two golden buffalo horns with a black rafter each.

The Stursberg coat of arms is a so-called talking crest. The bull refers to the word "stur" in the family-name, and the rafters symbolise the hill/mountain (mountain = "Berg"). Three rafters stand for the three farms that were originally located on the Stursberg hamlet and owned by family members.

All the members to the Stammesverband Stursberg have the right to use the family crest.

Gratitude

Today, we watched one of our favorite movies of all time, Lonesome Dove, based on the novel by Larry McMurtry.

Growing up in Montana and Wyoming, we always heard the tales of the west; roundups, cattle drives, gunfights and of course, we grew up around the Native Americans and learning a bit about their history, also.

I am always amazed when I watch a movie like this. I would think that it was fairly accurate, although not absolutely, about the way of life back then.

Can you imagine living out on the plains, in a wagon, if you were lucky, getting by on what food you could hunt? Can you imagine living in the same clothes for month months at a time? Can you imagine walking or if you were lucky, riding a horse all the time? Women were either prostitutes, bargirls or teachers, not much else was acceptable.

Fast food restaurants, washing machines, dishwashers, vehicles, and so many more things were not known of back then. People then were grateful for the food in their mouths, clothes on their back, with maybe a game of cards or a drink to look forward to at the end of the day. Children were considered a means to run the farm so the more children, the better. Education was not a priority, only possible if the children weren't needed to work.

Social gatherings were far and few between, mostly put together by the churches in the communities. Marriages were commonplace between the family up the road because people didn't get much further from their territory. So sisters and brothers would marry into the same families.

I suppose what I am trying to say is the next time you see a movie or read a book about times past, stop and think of where we are today.

Perhaps we really need to think about what we have and be grateful for it.

Thank you.

Ah, the times we live in . . . . .

Well, so far today, I've been warned against an email from my niece that really isn't from my niece. Guess they got hacked and are afraid that someone got their email addresses and is sending people bogus emails.

That is becoming the thing.

I've been warned by USPS that the delivery of an item failed (spoof), didn't even have enough tracking numbers. I received an email from Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook stating that Facebook is partnering with Apple and I can get a free iphone, if I just click on the link. I receive emails from PayPal stating I can win $1000 if I just "click here" and submit my entry.

I get emails from all over, Australia, UK, New Zealand, you name it, all wanting to share their wealth with me. Most go into my spam folder but once in awhile one will slip through and I mark it spam.

My husband sells laptop computers that he works on and does it locally through Craigslist. He likes to put a message in the first line specifically for scammers, such as:
"Scammers are not very intelligent." Then he watches for emails responding to his ad with this as the opening sentence!! The scammers just copy and paste that first sentence and hope you respond so they get your email address!! It's really kind of funny!!

I called my bank a couple of weeks ago and asked them if they sent me an email regarding a new way of banking. They said they did. I told them they were fools for doing so.

It seems that every Tom, Dick and Henry (sorry, guys, just a figure of speech) is into the act, trying to get us to open something so that they can steal our information, hack their way into our accounts, or steal our money.

So, lesson for today?? Don't open ANYTHING from an email!! If you think it might be true, call the company up and ask them if they sent it!! Then demand that they quit exposing their customers to online fraud and theft of information!

Tell them to mail the information to you. After all, USPS appears to need our business!!

The Story of Bat Boy

Bat Boy is a fictional (??) creature who made several appearances in the defunct American supermarket tabloid Weekly World NewsThe Weekly World News published patently fabricated stories which were purported to be factual. Within the pages of the paper, Bat Boy is described as a creature who is 'half human and half bat'. His pursuers, according to Weekly World News, are scientists and United States government officials; he is frequently captured, then later makes a daring escape. The original scientist who found him was named Dr. Ron Dillon. Matthew Daemon, S.O.S. (Seeker of Obscure Supernaturals) crossed paths with him on several occasions.
Bat Boy was created  (???) by former Weekly World News Editor Dick Kulpa. He debuted as a cover story on June 23, 1992. The original front-page photo of Bat Boy, showing his grotesque screaming face, was the second-best selling issue in the tabloid's history, and he has since evolved into a pop-culture icon. He became the tabloid's de facto mascot of sorts. The story of Bat Boy was turned into an Off-Broadway musical, Bat Boy: The Musical.

Exclusive video of Bat Boy on the NY subway!
Want to know more about the amazing Bat Boy? He's been credited with foiling terrorist attacks, endorsing Presidential candidates, stealing cars, biting children, piloting the Space Shuttle and lots more!! Busy little bat..
You can read all about him in the tell-all book: Going Mutant - The Bat Boy Exposed! - offered at onlineauction.com by curiocache!

Rosacea of the eye . . . .

Rosacea is a chronic condition which is characterized by a facial redness. Pimples can sometimes be part of the definition. Treatments such as topical steroids can aggravate the situation.

Rosacia primarily affects Caucasians but can also affect people of other ethnicities. It affects primarily women although men can suffer from it as well.

Rosacea usually begins as a redness on the central area of the face across the cheeks, nose or forehead but can also affect the neck, chest, ears, scalp and the eyes. There are four types of classified rosacea.

Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea - A permanent redness with a tendency to flush and/or blush easily. It is also common to have small blood vessels visible close to the surface of the skin. There is sometimes a burning or itching sensation.

Papulopustular rosacea - Some permanent redness with red bumps and possibly some postules that can be misidentified as acne. These usually last 1-4 days.

Phymatous rosacea - This type is usually associated with the enlargement of the nose, known as  rhinophyma. This subtype can cause thickening of the skin, irregular surface nodularities and enlargement.

Occular rosacea - Causes red, dry, irritated eyes and eyelids. Other symptoms are itching, feeling of foreign objects being present and burning.

About fourteen years ago, my husband was diagnosed with iritis in his left eye. At first the doctor thought it was pink eye, then they thought it was a foreign object. They finally came to the conclusion that it was iritis. They prescribed a steroid eye drop and about three times a year, he has had to use these to stop the pain, swelling, itching and burning. It usually lasts for about a week, after starting the drops.

Since he has changed over to the VA for medical care, he learned from the eye doctor that he has rosacia. Treatment will consist of warm compresses, for at least two minutes, a prescription for artificial tears to help wash out the eye, and at last resort, another prescription for a steroid eye drop.
I was amazed that they were able to find the reason for his continuous eye problem.

My mother had chronic iritis so badly that she almost lost her eyesight in her right eye. I remember the shades being pulled that summer, to stop the sun from coming into the house as her eye wouldn't dilate properly. The eye doctors back then didn't know why she got chronic iritis or really how to treat it. Mother got better but her eye never did heal to the point of being able to dilate and she had several laser surgeries, years later, to stop bleeding because of the trauma.

My niece, at the age of 18, was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in her eye. The size of a pin head, it looked like a freckle and the eye doctor decided he'd better have it checked further. She successfully had it removed.

The whole point of this is, we take our eyes for granted. We don't think that things can happen to the eye. It isn't talked about or discussed. But our eyesight is really pretty fragile. Our eyes can be affected just as any part of our bodies can, by disease or injury.

So take care of your eyes. They are the only ones you will have in this lifetime. You may need to wear glasses, like I do, and gripe about it, but think of how you would feel not seeing anything!

Your eyes are a precious gift. Remember that, please.

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch

Have you ever been to Wales? It is a small but beautiful country. ...

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch ( listen)) is a large village and community on the island of Anglesey in Wales, situated on the Menai Strait next to the Britannia Bridge and across the strait from Bangor. This village has the longest place name in Europe and one of the longest place names in the world. The short form of the village's name is Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, also spelled Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll. It is commonly known as Llanfair PG or Llanfairpwll.According to the 2001 census, the population of the community is 3,040, 76% of whom speak Welsh fluently; the highest percentage of speakers is in the 10–14 age group, where 97.1% are able to speak Welsh. It is the fifth largest settlement on the island by population.
Visitors stop at the railway station to be photographed next to the station sign, visit the nearby Visitors' Centre, or have 'passports' stamped at a local shop. Another tourist attraction is the nearby Marquess of Anglesey's Column, which at a height of 27 metres (89 ft) offers views over Anglesey and the Menai Strait. Designed by Thomas Harrison, the monument celebrates the heroism of Henry Paget, 1st Marquess of Anglesey at the Battle of Waterloo.
The long form of the name is the longest officially recognised place name in the United Kingdom and one of the longest in the world, being 58 letters in length (51 letters in the Welsh alphabet, where "ch", "ng" and "ll" count as single letters).
The name means: [St.] Mary's Church (Llanfair) [in] the hollow (pwll) of the white hazel (gwyngyll) near (goger) the rapid whirlpool (y chwyrndrobwll) [and] the church of [St.] Tysilio (llantysilio) with a red cave ([a]g ogo goch).
This village was originally known as Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll (and is sometimes still referred to as Llanfairpwllgwyngyll) and was given its long name in the 19th century in an attempt to develop the village as a commercial and tourist centre (see Significance of the name below). Today the village is still signposted as Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, marked on Ordnance Survey maps as Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll and is known to locals as Llanfairpwll or simply Llanfair. The name is also seen shortened to Llanfair PG, which is sufficient to distinguish it from the many other Welsh villages with Llanfair in their names. Other variant forms use the full name but with tysilio mutated to dysilio, and/or with a hyphen between drobwll and llan. In Welsh, the initial Ll may be mutated to a single L in some contexts.
The village's long name cannot be considered an authentic Welsh-language toponym. It was artificially contrived in the 1860s to bestow upon the station the honour of having the longest name of any railway station in Britain; an early example of a publicity stunt. The village's own web site credits the name to a cobbler from the local village of Menai Bridge. According to Sir John Morris-Jones the name was created by a local tailor, whose name he did not confide, letting the secret die with him.
The eponymous St. Mary's Church. The village was originally known as 'Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll' "St Mary's church in the hollow of the white hazel." 'Pwllgwyngyll' was the name of the original medieval township where the village stands today.
The village is split into two smaller villages, Llanfairpwllgwyngyll-uchaf (Upper Llanfairpwllgwyngyll) the original part of the village and Llanfairpwllgwyngyll-isaf (Lower Llanfairpwllgwyngyll) the newer area nearer the railway station. These are occasionally referred to as Pentre Uchaf and Pentre Isaf (Upper Village and Lower Village) respectively.
