Interview with MetzyMom!!

Now, for those of you that aren't in the know, MetzyMom has been the radio hostess for OLA.com for a year now!! The radio program is on TalkShoe and the next show will be held February 29!! Beginning at 8:00 pm EST.

This will be a longer running show as Metzy has traveled from Arizona, her home state, to Oregon to have the show LIVE at the OLA.com office!! Wow!! And as you can see in prior posts, she has been meeting up with various OLA.com members along the way and she's not done yet!!

Before Metzy took off, she did an interview with me about the show. And, as promised, here it is.

When is the anniversary show going to be held?

The show is currently scheduled for the 29th of February. I had planned to do it on February 2nd, but with what has been described as "the worst weather to hit the Northwest in 30 years", I figured I'd better do some rethinking. I mean let's face it... I'm a fabulous driver but I drive in Hot Arizona, not Snowbound Oregon!!!

What are some of the topics going to be? I know this is the one year anniversary for the radio show but what else? I know that it's going to be a review, of the year? Of course, seller of the month for February, and you said you'd have a couple of guests. Anything else?

The show is going to be a review of the last year. A walk down memory lane. I plan to talk a little bit about everything we've done up til now. I've got a couple surprises up my sleeve, but people will have to tune in to the LIVE show to find out what... and there will be prizes!!! The only hint I'm gonna give is this: Make sure you know what we covered... lol... take an hour a day, while you're listing this next week, and listen to a different show each day. It will be worth your while!!!

How did you get started in this? What prompted you to do the radio show?

I was a dedicated fan of Dave White, the original OLA Radio host. He always encouraged me to call in and participate during the LIVE show. I usually called in and participated for a few minutes each show... for maybe, I don't know, maybe 4 or 5 months. Dave decided he wanted a co-host and auditions were held. I don't know how many people auditioned, I only know of 2 others who tried out. I didn't even know I'd won the job until the day of the following show! From that time on, I got to be on every show and give my opinions and share facts and research.

When Dave got sick and quit doing eCommerce Radio, a hole was left in the eCommerce radio world. I didn't think about continuing on without him, because like everyone else, I thought he'd get better and return. When that didn't happen, I began thinking about doing the OLA Show myself. I was already doing a weekly eCommerce radio program for ALL sites, but my heart has always been here at OnlineAuction.com. So when Chris Fain came through Kingman one hot summer day in July 2010, we briefly discussed it. With the way that eCommerce was changing, it was becoming harder and harder to do a show for ALL sites and so I put SellerBuzz on hiatus and got ready to bring back OLA Radio.

What was your goal when you started?

My goal was to provide a once a month informative and educational eCommerce program specific to OnlineAuction.com Members. Many things in eCommerce can apply to all sites, but each site has it's differences. I wanted to highlight how OnlineAuction.com was different and better and at the same time, provide an easy path to learning this better but different platform. There is a learning curve when you join a new site and I hoped I could make the curve a little less curvy, kind of a "quick start" to listing at OnlineAuction.com.

What is your goal today? I imagine it might have changed a tad since beginning.

It has! In the beginning, it was a lot of dry basics. Now it's a lot more fun for me, and hopefully for everyone else too. Whereas the focus in the beginning was more on learning the boring basics, now it's more interactive. It's more about Everyone instead of Everything.

What was the BEST program that you had and why?

Easy answer! I loved the Christmas Show. I had been told by many of my radio host peers that what I wanted to do couldn't be done, that many before me had tried and it just never worked out right. That didn't stop me from trying it anyway! Nothing ventured nothing gained.... My idea was to work the show so that it felt like an office party. People stopping by, sharing a toast, having a drink or bite to eat, hugs and kisses, and back out on their way to the next party. By coordinating with the OLA Staff and OLA Chatties, I think that was exactly the feel of the show. It took a lot of work and a lot of coordination, but it felt like a Christmas Party to me... I hope it felt like that to everyone else.

What was the worst program that you had and why?

I don't think in terms of a "worst" program, because each program is a lesson in something different... and sometimes that "something different" is a surprise to even me. The first program featured our beloved CEO Chris Fain, but Chris couldn't get in on the phone line. It should have been a disaster... except that it really wasn't. I learned how to get a guest on the air even when they couldn't get on themselves. We all learned that not everything goes as smooth and easy as we'd like, but that with a little patience and perhaps a little dead air time, everything works out in the end if we stick with it. I had originally planned to edit out all that dead air, but decided, in the end, that it was a great lesson in sticking to what you're doing, seeing what you're doing through, even when it's tough. I kind of think of OLA that way. When I first came, it was new and a challenge because all I knew was eBay. But I stuck with it and saw it through. I learned how to lean into the learning curve and embrace it. So I don't think of any of the shows as "worst" shows... because I learned something valuable from each one.

I presume that you ARE going to continue!!! Right??????

I am going to continue. As long as OLA wants me to host the show, I'll be there. I'm thinking about doing some different things this year... like maybe having a guest co-host on a few of the shows... I think we've got a lot of people with a lot to say... and I hope to give more people a voice through the show.

So, if you want to know what the show is all about, go to TalkShoe on February 29th to see what is going on!! It's going to be a blast!!

Metzy's trip . . . .

Talked to Metzy just a few minutes ago.

She had a travel tip for us!!

Travel tip #1 from Metzy: "You can always tell the kind of stay you will have by the bathroom."

She said the Gold Country Casino in Oroville is amazing!! The bedroom is bigger than all her bedrooms in her house!! The bathroom is exceptional with a rubber ducky for the roman tub!! Wow!!

She said it is so clean, she doesn't even want to leave a deposit!!

The hotel she stayed at in Hollywood was also exceptional.
The hotel in Monteray was a disaster. Pictures to come later.

She is on her way to have breakfast with Amy~MaggieMayBeCrafty and then on to have lunch with Suze~CountryNaturals. After that is the big push to Grants Pass!!

Woohoo!! You go, girl!!

Tuesday, February 21, 2012

Bring A Friend for Terrific Tuesday

Hi! I wanted to invite you to play in the Terrific Tuesday 'game' that is the OLA Chat Forum. We play every Tuesday! Sign ups usually go up on Friday/Saturday. You do not need to buy anthing to play. It is a wonderful opportunity to get some extra exposure without spending a dime! Of course, if you want to buy something, no one will stop you!

The OLA Sellers who participate usually offer some sort of "Special", some kind of free gift or discount, so you can usually find some great deals during the 'game'.

Again, you do not need to buy anything to play AND you don't have to be at your computer all day! Stop in and be socialable, chat, visit, answer a question, etc. when you have a few minutes!

All you need to do is follow this link (it's the direct link to the sign up page here at OnlineAuction.com): http://www.onlineauction.com/chat/viewtopic.php?t=21479 and post that you'd like to play. It helps to offer some sort of special, but it's not necessary. Then, on Tuesday, stop by when you have time and see what's going on!

Oh! And tell them "MetzyMom" sent you!!!

I hope to see you there,

Metzy

The Day OnlineAuction.com Came To Town

The Day OLA Came To Town

July 9th, 2010. Kingman, Arizona. Dead Noon and it’s 110 degrees in the shade. I’m on the phone with one of my best friends. My husband had a meeting at work and called to say he was on his way home. I know that’s what the call is for, so I don’t even switch over to answer it and continue talking to my friend, drinking coffee and poking around my computer.

My cell phone rings and I look at the caller ID and it’s my husband. “Hold on” I say to my friend. “That’s my husband calling and he wouldn’t call my cell phone if it wasn’t something important.”

So with my friend on one line, I answer my cell phone and my whole day changed immediately.
“Guess what I’m looking at?” my husband asks. Before I can answer, he says “I’m looking at a red truck pulling a black trailer and the trailer says OnlineAuction.com on it!”

“No way! Can you see who is in the truck?”

My husband says “Oregon plates… it’s gotta be… It is! Chris Fain is driving the truck!”

“Paul, which way is he headed? Up the hill?”

“Yes! He’s headed the same way I am.”

All I can think of at this moment is that OnlineAuction.com’s Founder and CEO, Chris Fain, is headed to Kingman… OMG!!! I hang up on my husband without so much as a Good Bye and start hollering at my kids… “Someone grab a vacuum! Someone get this laundry out of here!” I wake up my entire household (even the ones who work at night) and everyone is looking at me like I’ve lost my mind. I try to calmly explain that Chris Fain is coming up the hill when my cell phone rings again…

“Did you hang up on me?” Oh Damn! Maybe I should’ve said Good Bye before hanging up on my husband… and before I can apologize…

“Look, I flagged them down and they pulled over. They’re driving through Kingman and are going to stop and see you. You need to call (gives me the number) and give them directions. See if they have time for lunch…” and yes, once again, I hang up… at least this time I said Good Bye… Don't it just figure that my husband would meet Chris before I would???

The house phone rings and it’s Valerie, Chris’s wife. She gives me the size of the trailer so that I know what kind of place to give him directions to… OMG!!! I can barely stand it!!! He’s really going to be here in Kingman!!!

I call the number and talk to Chris. No, they don’t have time for lunch, but they do want to stop and meet me. I give him directions to a nice large parking lot right on Route 66 in front of a local JB’s Restaurant and Sonic Drive In. I tell him we’ll be there when he pulls off the freeway.

I send half my household back to bed, take a deep breath and almost begin to relax… OMG!!! I wonder if my tie dye dress is too casual? My hair? Can I lose 25 lbs in the next half hour? OMG!!! My youngest son tells me my dress is fine. It is, after all, who and what I am. OK, so I look huge in it, but it is 110 outside and it’s not like I’m taking them to lunch at a fancy restaurant, so my dress will be just fine. I throw a headband on and ignore the fact that I'm a very tall oompa loompa... I figure they’ve been driving for a while, what the hell will they care what I look like?!!??!

My husband arrives home and runs to change his clothes (he’s in a suit from his meeting at work) and out he comes, I throw him my keys, grab my OLA Banner and we’re off!

We pull in where Chris will be meeting us and stare at the freeway off ramp. 5 minutes… 8 minutes… OMG! Did I give him the wrong directions? My husband suggests I call him to make sure I’ve given him the correct directions, but wouldn’t you know it? I didn’t bring the phone number! Crap!!!

… and then my husband points and says “I think that’s them”. Sitting on the off ramp, getting ready to turn onto Route 66 is a red truck and what looks like a black trailer hidden behind some trees… as it turns onto the street, there is no doubt that it’s the OLA trailer! Lights! Camera! Camera??? Camera! Action!

Here are some photos of when OLA came to town!

10 Best Shipping Practices from WebWholeSaler

From WebWholesaler:

By Eric Leuenberger

It's no secret: Shipping is one of the most essential factors in closing ecommerce sales. We know, and it has been proven, that offering free shipping can further boost sales. But step back for a minute and think about how you present your shipping information to your customers. How and when you present it can be as important as the shipping offer itself. Customers want to know how much it is going to cost to ship their order, and you better have the answers easily available for them, or risk losing the sale. Here are ten different best practices to consider when dealing with shipping:

1. Don't Make Customers Login To Get Shipping Rates.
How would you feel if you went shopping on the internet and found that you had to login just to view shipping rates? Not happy, correct? It's not right, and your customers won't go for it. The questions, "How much does shipping cost?," and, "How fast can I get it?," are first in a customer's mind, and to force them to login will cost you prescious sales. Customers should be able to see the cost for shipping on the shopping cart page, and it should be an option on the product pages as well. If you base your prices on the location where the order will be shipped, give people the ability to enter their zip code for a quote. (Notes from MetzyMom are all in italics and follow each practice... Customers do not have to login to see shipping rates at OLA. They do have to login to buy, but not to see shipping rates. I also find that including a more detailed shipping section in the actual listing answers ALL their questions).

2. Include Shipping Info on all Product Pages.
The product info page is one of those places where shipping questions often arise. Customers want to know, "If I add this item to my cart, how much is it going to cost to ship it?". As a result, giving the customers the ability to see shipping times and costs from or on the product pages should be an option. Offering a link to the shipping rates and policies is a good idea, but an even better one is using something like AJAX or a tabbed view, to enable the customer to get their shipping rates without the need to leave the page they are on. (OLA has a shipping tab, but you MUST enter the information or the tab is worthless. If I had a nickel for every time I opened the shipping tab to find it says "See Listing for Information" (and then found none in the listing) or it gave only the bare minimum info, or had nothing on combined shipping, I'd be a rich old woman).

3. Link to Shipping Page from Shopping Cart.
In the shopping cart where customers select the shipping method, be sure to provide more information regarding what they can expect with each option. (since we here at OLA do not have a traditional 'shopping cart', it makes it all the more important to have a shipping policy with all the information within the listing).

4. Don't Try To Make a Lot of Money off Shipping.
Customers are shoppers, and can find shipping rates for similar items on competitor sites very easily. They are often sensive to high shipping prices. Don't attempt to make more money (profit from) by rasing shipping and handling rates. It will backfire on you. (No one, and I mean NO ONE likes a postage cheat. Adding a $1 to cover packaging is fine, but only if you've explained it and what it will cover. Better to put any additional costs in the price of the item than to put it in the shipping).

5. Consider Offering Free Shipping at Level Above Your Average Order Value.
If your average order value is $45, consider offering free shipping at $55, to increase that average value. (This will also lend itself to moving more inventory because customers will order more to get the free shipping, especially when they are close with their original order).

6. Show Delivery Estimates by Region.
On your shipping page, show a map of UPS or FedEx estimated delivery times, based on region. These graphics are often provided by your shipping carriers, and can easily be downloaded and placed on your site. (This is really for those who have their own website in addition to their OLA House, but it does make sense to put estimated delivery times in your listings. This is easily done in a Shipping Policies section on the actual listing).

7. Ship Next Business Day as the Norm.
Ship Express Orders Same Day. Customers want things fast. Even if they purchased three to five day shipping, you need tomake sure you get all orders out the door they next day (that being at least the day after the order arrived). In general, make it a point to process orders within one business day. There is no reason to sit on orders, and doing so increases your chances of the order not arriving on time, which leads to unhappy customers.
For those that choose "1 Day Express,""2 Day Express," etc., shipping methods (if you offer them), consider shipping these orders the same day you get the order in, up to a certain cut-off time. An example of terminology for this type of method might be, "All orders received before 1 pm. EST are shipped the same day." (This is really for Express and Express-type orders only. See Practice #10 for the others).

8. Provide Tracking Numbers.
You should be doing this already, but it needs to be mentioned. A critical time to start building customer relationships is directly after an order. Customers want to know that the order they placed has, in fact, been received, and they want the ability to track that package's progress to their doorstep. As soon as you receive the tracking numbers and shipping information, you should promptly email your customers and relay that tracking info to them. If your system enables it, make the tracking number a link directly to the carrier's website (or your own), which pulls up the delivery schedule for them. It provides an extra layer of usability, and your customers will appreciate this small gesture in the long run. (The USPS Delivery Confirmation Number doesn't always track each step of the way, but sending that number builds confidence and trust between the buyer and the seller, even when it can't actually be tracked every step of the way. That you gave them every bit of information that you could is what matters).

9. Don't Ignore or Point Fingers on Lost Shipments.
If you ship any level of items over the Internet, is is bound to happen at some point. A shipment will get lost in the shuffle. Although it may not be your fault, you need to work with the customer to correct the situation. Don't point fingers. Instead, help solve the problem. If that means reshipping the order, then do it. (I actually look at feedback to see how the seller handles this! It doesn't have to be anyones fault, and usually it isn't... and that is something to keep in mind!).

10. Under Promise, Over Deliver.
Don't try promising something you can't back up. Give yourself a shipping cushion. To avoid unrealistic delivery times, you may want to add one or two (or even three) days' padding on to your delivery times estimates (except for overnight, one and two day options). Companies like Dell and Amazon tend to do this pretty well in most circumstances. They say, "3-5 day shipping," for example, and the package arrives in 2 days. (That says it all. The only thing I'd add is that if you sold it with Media Mail shipping and you see that First Class Parcel is only a few cents more, go ahead and upgrade it. Give your customer better and it's almost a lock that they will be back!).

Weeny Witch Unused First Edition by Ida DeLange in Pristine Condition at OnlineAuction.com

This book is no longer in print. It is rare to find, especially in this condition! Printed in 1968, the few copies I've been able to find online for sale, have been in 'good but used' condition at best, and run about $140.00 (average for 'good' condition). The one I have was probably never read. The pages have NO wear whatsoever. The spine has NO cracks. It looks and smells absolutely brand new!

Christmas Poem For OnlineAuction.com

ONLINEAUCTION.COM

Oh the joy of Christmas
Not a single parent awake
Little ones get out of bed
In waiting for presents to take
Not wanting to wait, they shake the boxes
Eating small candies stuck in their stockings
Amazed at all the stuff under the tree
Unknowing that OnlineAuction.com where parents went shopping
Christmas made better
Twenty-four seven
In the minds of shoppers
OnlineAuction.com is Heaven
Never a Final Value
Don’t worry about listing fees
OnlineAuction.com is here
To make shopping a breeze
Come see us today, you’ll like what you see
OnlineAuction.com is definitely the place to be
Merry Christmas!
